£40 winter restoration

Post by mark239 »

I'll get shots up of the rest of the fleet (2 more 16V's - one a phase one), 1 x 1985 1.6RS in immaculate condition, and a 1990 1.4 TGE in great shape, but thought I'd start with what I'm prepping as a daily driver.

The post below is an amalgamation of posts from another forum where I'm documenting this, so please excuse it!!

She's a 1990 Phase 2 BX 16 valve, the body is absolutely immaculate underneath, paint is faded though, but it looks like it will polish up.

Engine bay was full of leaves, but the body and chassis is absolutely perfect.

The car has the wrong (A phase one) rear bumper, but there is a rear phase 2 bumper in our massive pile of BX parts so it's all good.

Plans are new liners (It has 102k miles on it so due a rebuild although the leakdown was good, it may as well get freshened up now), stem seals, new piston rings, put my spare Jenvey throttle bodies on her, Emerald K3 ecu and new hydraulic return pipes. Will make a nice retro daily driver. Should be nippy enough at that to see off most modern 'hot' hatches.

rear shot, light clusters are in the boot.
Image

Interior is in great shape - ignore the stuffing on floor! Was from the spare interior being stacked in it
Image

needs a good tidy up in the bay, but everything works.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only just getting to do something to this now! Didn't get a lot done today, just started to strip down - got the new radiator in as well though.

Will be getting the head off tomorrow then the pistons out to put new rings on. Will need valve stem oil seals as well.

Then it's on with the Jenveys and the sporty inlet cam!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Made some progress today, got the head off and was pleasantly surprised by the liner condition.

A hone should be all I need to do to them before firing on the new gapless rings.

Had a bit of bother with one of the bolts, some bellend must have had at them before with a poor fitting driver and broke a bit off it. Will be replacing them anyway

Got the barge into the garage with the lift today, got the non standard front bumper off and stuck a new door seal on the drivers side.

Bodywork won't start until after all the mechanicals are perfect.

underside of the car is completely rot free - you'd think it had been kept in a bath of oil!!

Anyway, few pics

Outside at last (You can see how well the paint is going to come up - i did a test patch on the bottom half of the drivers door, it's coming up like new, and that was the worst bit!)

in the garage at last for the fun to begin!

Got an hour this evening to get a piston out to send off to get the correct sized gapless rings.

Bores are in very good visual order!!

Big ends in good order as well

Got the head back together at least this weekend

The valve collets were ridiculously tricky to get in with a normal spring compressor and small screwdriver with grease on it!

Valves in and springs mostly in
Image

'special' stem seal tool - 10mm socket
Image

fully assembled, bar buckets
Image

test fitting the piston rings once gapped - note the top ring is in 2 pieces, a rail on top and the ring below that forms a gapless ring.

Putting the buckets back in
Image

camshafts back in
Image

oil spray bar back in

Unfortunately it looks as if I will have to replace at least one liner, as the ring clearances uncut were too great, so going to have to look about that this week.

High lift inlet cam has been ordered but going to take 4 weeks to arrive, so building up with standard cam for the time being.

This week I should have the engine back together assuming I get the liner(s) I need.

I'm currently waiting on a set of new liners.

I ordered the ones from a 1.9GTi, and a set of big end bearings - total cost was a rather pleasurable £200 - bit better than proper D6C liners....

Blimey. What a superb first post! (and second, and third). Loved spotting other Citroens lurking. Did I see a Mk1 BX and a Dyane?

(ah, I see you mentioned a Mk1 BX in your first post. Spotting fail!)

I'll get pics of the other 2 by the weekend, they're at the parent's house under the covers - you can just see the Mk1 RS in the top pic in my first post, and the white 1.4 is under the cover in the photo where my brother is pushing the car into the shed.

The pride of the fleet is this money pit: (Yes, that's an activa in the background)

And yes, that is a Dyane, the brother owns that - he restored it to as new a few years ago. It's 1981 I think.

That mk1 16RS didn't come from N.Ireland by chance?

I'm in Northern Ireland! It came from England.

We also had another Mk1 but it was pure rotten so was scalped for parts then scrapped.

You didn't buy it around about 2007 by chance?

I cant remember how long ago we went over to get it!

We went to lift it in eastleigh. I think that's where it was, and it was a mad dash back to Holyhead for the ferry!!

It must be a good while ago as I was using a Dell axim with tomtom installed as GPS.
