16v rocker cover gasket

Post by RobC »

Mine's leaking. From a quick search there seem to be two extremes in price: spoox components are asking a ludicrous £50+ for a genuine Peugeot one, while I can find others of questionable brand on eBay for around a fiver.

There must be a happy median somewhere? Any suggestions...? :)

Hylomar alone wouldn't seal a 16v cover. Worst case pop some on with the cheapo gasket.

I have taken to using high temperature silicone in a standard cartridge gun on all gaskets and hoses. It seems to work well even on sump gaskets.

Thanks for the replies. eBay it is - driving to Montpelier next week so if it all starts pissing out and destroys the engine on top of the Millau viaduct, I'll let you know...

Well that didn't work - £5 off ebay gets you completely the wrong part!

This one looks a bit more promising though. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-405-1 ... SwIgNXjEx-

I can't even find a 16v gasket on there for a fiver!

They come up if you search for Mi16.

For the one I bought in error, I assumed (in error) they just had the wrong graphic in the listing, but that the actual part would be suitable. More fool me - £5 was always going to be too good to be true.

I almost always find better deals by searching part numbers rather than descriptions. There are some proper bargains about when they are listed with little effort.

Just got back, 1800 miles later.

Despite the weeping gasket she didn't seem to use a drop of oil. Only hiccup was the oil temp gauge sender wire deciding to break.

Only saw two other BXs during the entire trip! A few waves from other appreciative French drivers though (at least I assume they were waving to say hi rather than anything less pleasant).

God I love driving this car.

At one point the temp gauge was showing 65 when descending the Massif Central, even in 28 degree heat. Perhaps a new thermostat is in order.
