Should the HP turn free and smoothly by hand, without any notching or stepped feeling? Pump is on a 1.6 petrol. My uncle thinks he let it run dry and...

it should be easy to rotate with no hydraulic pressure pumped up, and you should feel as the internal rotor presses each pistion in turn
